About the artist
Nina Lamiel Bruchhaus

Bruchhaus’s bold, colorful, and untethered works invite close, deliberate examination.

Her work deals with the question of spirituality in contemporary art. Do we find ourselves confronted with a loss of meaning through the constant repetition of gestures and the restriction to color and form without assigning them to a deeper meaning? Can bridges be built between different cultures and religions without the risk of cultural appropriation? How do cultures differ while actually meaning the same thing? Is there a universality inherent in all rituals, myths and religions? What role does nature play as protagonist in this context?

The artist, who has also studied religious studies and has travelled and researched mythology and religious practice outside her cultural circle, works in the media of painting, drawing and ceramics. She wants to oppose digitalization, as she is confronted with a one-sided development towards the impoverishment of sensuality by the screen. Bruchhaus focuses on the multi-sensory abilities of our body.

She rejects the constructed duality of body, mind and soul, which she sees as a construct of Western modernity. Texts from the philosophy of nature, such as Aristotle’s “De Anima” or works of phenomenology by Maurice Merleau Ponty as well as the sociologist Georg Simmel support Bruchhaus’ theory, according to which man can be defined without this separation. In her works, the boundaries between humans and nature are consciously dissolved.

These game-changing works from any recognizable references to the physical world envelope you in forms of dusty orange to pale lavenders, and contribute to their levitating power. Her marvelously varied means of applying color, entangled with riveting compositions arrives at a complex visual unity. The feeling of security in nature and nature as a symbol of liveliness is expressed, focusing on similarities and differences, continuities and shifts.
