About the artist
Dorothee Liebscher

The paintings of Dorothee Liebscher depict environments, by incorporating diverse real and fantasy layers, that explore the heterogeneous perspectives such as fragile buildings and fallow land occupied by vegetation. She meticulously deals with each sculptural and architectural layer, and represents the temporal aspect: what was, what is, what will be? Delicate and calm, gentle and emotionally charged, Liebscher’s landscape and interior paintings present the decay; illustrating the fragility and vulnerability of society.

Beautiful as these images are, they’re unsettling – abandoned spaces are hauntingly evocative and oftentimes suggestive of prior events, encouraging the viewer to dive into a hidden and alien, but at the same time familiar- looking world. Thanks to the unique color scheme, the scenes seem to glow and give a special atmosphere. Idyllic scenes show a visual reality that cannot be explained, sometimes disturbing the ostensibly idyllic setting.

Her intricate paintings of depopulated landscapes and enigmatic architectural spaces stage beautiful structures with an intriguing story.
