About the artist
Christelle Kahla

Christelle Kahla’s vibrant paintings combine motifs of cultural and geographical fluidity and juxtapose the strokes of brushes with marks that evoke computer graphics. As a digital native, Kahla interrogates the paradoxes of our hyper-connected world and makes apparent the sporadic ways in which we consume information.

The object repetition and varied palettes invite the viewer to understand the failures of being part of the painting as well as to testify to the radicality and the ruthlessness of the medium. The bright colors strive to reflect the urgency of the artist’s physical presence in space as traces remaining of a performance.

These motifs are often derived from multiple contexts and address tension between gestural and geometrical forms: mediated and authentic experience, repetition and change, flatness and depth, lines and pattern, figuration and abstraction.

Assembled in a space of intensification of movements, Kahla’s canvases are unframed and directly stapled on the wall, which makes their horizontal and vertical verges distorted and their shapes reminiscent of animal skins. Kahla’s flamboyant surfaces generate alternative landscapes for an imagined generation of digital inhabitants.
